We believe investors still need to be vigilant because the uncertainty of geopolitical standoff still looms large. Commodity prices are least likely to see a secular downturn even after war subsides because sanctions will continue to disrupt the global supply chain. Unless sanctions are withdrawn, the global markets can remain volatile in the coming months and India will not remain insulated.

Indian sugar mills signed contracts to export 550,000 tonnes of the sweetener in recent days, as surging global prices and a weak rupee made overseas sales lucrative, four dealers told Reuters.

Oil unlikely to come below $100 anytime soon: David Lennox

We think that the speculative event of the market is coming up and we just do not know how much that may come out. The basic fundamentals for oil remain quite sound. One would have to suggest that the Brent price is certainly not going to visit prices below triple figures, that is below $100 anytime soon. One would think that it is probably going to stay around $110. We think at this point in time if there further news of oil producing countries putting their hands up, then again we could see oil price falling back.

Spot gold extended losses below $2,000 on Thursday after posting its biggest decline in 14 months, as risk sentiment improved on hopes for a diplomatic solution to the war between Russia and Ukraine, with foreign ministers from both countries set to meet in Turkey later today. A top foreign policy aide to President Zelensky said Wednesday that Ukraine is open to discuss Russia’s demand of neutrality as long as it’s given security guarantees, though it won’t surrender a single inch of territory. Meanwhile, investors remained concerned over the threat of an inflationary shock to the global economy. MCX Gold April has slipped to Rs 52,473 per 10 gram. Eyes will be on US CPI data later today.

Bearish bets on Asia FX rise amid Ukraine crisis, rupee shorts near 2-yr high

  • Investors raised their bearish views on most Asian currencies, with short bets on the Indian rupee at a near two-year high, as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine supercharged commodity prices and stoked inflation concerns, a Reuters poll showed on Thursday.

  • The poll of 13 respondents showed market participants turned short on the Singapore dollar and significantly extended short bets on the South Korean won, the Taiwanese dollar and the Philippine peso.

  • The invasion, which Russia calls a “special operation”, has led investors away from risky emerging markets and caused regional bond yields to spike, as surging prices stoke worries over how economies recovering from the pandemic will manage higher inflation in the face of slowing growth.

The extreme volatility in markets is reflected by the $30 drop in crude and 3 % spike in Nasdaq. Such massive ups and downs are the consequences of high level of uncertainty and sharply fluctuating market expectations. The relentless selling by the FPIs is not having much of an impact on the markets now as revealed by the 331 point rise in Nifty when FIIs sold equity worth Rs 4800 crores. Short squeeze in an oversold market can cause sudden reversal in market trends as seen yesterday. High quality financials present good buying opportunities now. The down risk is limited.
